Every autumn, the changing seasons bring a new tradition to my suburban county in California. The rustling leaves signal the grand unveiling of a giant corn maze, a challenge that was initially daunting but has grown on me over the years. It’s a time that now fills me with anticipation, a stark contrast to the anxiety I felt during our first visit, especially with the responsibility of navigating the labyrinth on a hot October day with my eager son by my side. When presented with the option of acquiring a map and my neurotic and neuro-spicy self couldn’t resist.

See, no one wants to be lost with a child in a literal labyrinth. So, our first time going, when we were offered the option of a map – a mere $1 addition to the ticket price — it was an easy yes for me.

My son was eager to plunge straight into the adventure, but I was compelled by getting to the exit in the most efficient way. My strategy? Plan our escape before delving deep into the maze. I dug a sparkly gel pen out of my fanny pack and I charted our path to freedom.

Sure, we got slightly turned around (it’s all part of the adventure!), but our blueprint made all the difference. The beauty of this experience wasn’t just in our preparation, but in the act of navigating the path we’d set. One of the highlights for me was at the end when our confidence in our route was so solidified that we barely needed to consult our map. We came out excited, conquering heroes of the corn maze, basking in the glory of our shared achievement.

And the last year we did it, two families were following right behind us, confident that we were *all* going to be getting out!
